You may lose your license for DUI but gain a BAIID

The state of Illinois is serious about keeping drunk drivers off its roadways. Perhaps you are a first offender and worry about losing your driver’s license.

You may be eligible for a Monitoring Device Driving Permit, which paves the way for a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device installation in your car.

If convicted of driving under the influence but this is your first such offense, you may be eligible for a Monitoring Device Driving Permit. You must be 18 years of age or older to qualify, and you must not have a previous DUI conviction in Illinois. If you are eligible for the MDDP, you will receive an application in the mail, which you will complete and return to the Secretary of State. You can rely on legal assistance if you have questions about the MDDP. Once approved, you will have 14 days to have a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device installed on any vehicle you drive.

How the BAIID works

The BAIID is about the size of a mobile phone and attaches to the wiring in your car. You will blow into a mouthpiece, the device will measure the blood alcohol content level in your system, and if you pass the breath test, the car will start. There will also be random retests as you drive.

Your responsibilities

You will be responsible for all MDDP and BAIID fees. Note that the ignition interlock devices from approved vendors in Illinois have cameras that take pictures of the driver while he or she is taking the breath test. Do not try to trick the device. Information from your IID downloads to the Office of the Secretary of State. If the device detects a violation, you will receive a letter asking for an explanation. You must respond or risk having your license suspension extended. Once you become accustomed to having an ignition interlock device, you may begin to appreciate it. After all, with the BAIID in your car, you will be driving while sober.
